I never thought I’d be the type to get excited about fake plants, but here I am, waxing poetic about a ceramic flower like it’s the Mona Lisa of wall decor. It all started when my partner, in a desperate attempt to breathe life into our apartment without the responsibility of actual living things, brought home what looked like a green starfish having an identity crisis. “It’s modern art,” they said, holding up the ceramic creation that vaguely resembled a small air plant. “And it’s fake floral, so you can’t kill it.” I eyed the thing skeptically, wondering if it would clash with our carefully curated collection of takeout menus and unwashed coffee mugs. But as soon as we hung it on the wall, something magical happened. Our sad, bare apartment suddenly felt like a hip art gallery – the kind where people nod thoughtfully at blank canvases and sip overpriced wine. Now, I find myself giving impromptu tours to bewildered guests. “And here,” I say, gesturing grandly to our little green friend, “is a prime example of post-modern botanical abstraction.” I have no idea what that means, but it sounds impressive, and isn’t that the point of wall decor? The best part? Unlike real plants, this one thrives on neglect. It’s the perfect metaphor for adulthood – fake it ’til you make it, and look good doing it.
